Plan Your 2027–2028 Costa Rica Photography Trip

Physis is now designing private photography programs for December 2027 to April 2028 and for the rest of 2028. This page answers the questions photographers ask most when they start planning: when to go, how far ahead to book, how long to stay and what it costs.

When is the best time to go?

December to April is Costa Rica's dry season on the Pacific side and in the highlands, with more predictable light and access. It is the most requested period and the first to fill. February to April is a favorite window for Resplendent Quetzals. May to November, the green season, brings lush forests, fewer visitors and excellent macro and frog photography; afternoon rain is common, mornings are often productive. The Caribbean slope has its own pattern, and Physis plans each route around it.

How far ahead should I book?

For December 2027 to April 2028, we recommend starting 9 to 12 months before your dates. The lodges, private hides and specialists that work best for photography have limited capacity. Green-season programs can usually be planned with less notice.

How many days do I need?

Six days is enough for one region and one main subject, such as quetzals and highland hummingbirds. Eight to ten days lets you combine two or three regions — for example highlands, northern lowlands and Sarapiquí. Twelve days or more suits photographers who want several subjects at a relaxed pace. What does it cost?

Private programs start from US$4,000. The final price depends on the number of travelers, season, length, lodge category and the photo sessions you choose. See what a private photography tour costs

How planning works

  1. Tell us what you want to photograph. Share your subjects, dates, who is traveling and how you like to work in the field.
  2. Talk with Physis. A short video call to understand your priorities, pace and expectations.
  3. Receive your proposal. A day-by-day itinerary with lodges, transportation, local specialists, photo sessions and a clear list of what is included and what is not.
  4. Confirm and prepare. Once you approve, Physis confirms the reservations and helps you prepare gear and logistics for the trip.
