The Independent Adventure gives you control of the wheel without leaving the photography itinerary to chance. Physis designs, reserves, confirms, coordinates and supports the program, while qualified local guides lead the specialized sessions arranged along the route.
What independent means
Independent refers to driving autonomy. It does not mean an unplanned road trip, a list of disconnected bookings or the absence of Physis responsibility.
Physis Photo Tours designs the route around photographic goals and realistic travel times, selects and reserves the agreed services, confirms the program and provides operational support. Andy Bezara personally curates and approves the itinerary. You drive between destinations and meet the appropriate local specialists for the selected field activities.
A photography itinerary designed for Costa Rican roads
Map distance alone does not describe a Costa Rica transfer. Road surface, weather, mountain crossings, traffic, arrival time, luggage and access can all affect the day. Independent Adventure uses realistic sequencing so driving does not consume the light or energy intended for photography.
Vehicle or rental inclusions are not assumed. The exact arrangement, insurance responsibilities, equipment capacity and service scope must be documented in the individual proposal. The private-driver and transportation guide explains when a supported-driving style may be a better fit.
Local expertise where it matters most
Driving yourself does not remove local field leadership. Qualified local guides lead the specialized activities selected for the itinerary. You meet them at the confirmed destination and time, allowing independent movement between regions while retaining current habitat and wildlife knowledge in the field.
The Physis Local Guide Network is part of the operating system behind the journey, not an optional substitute for planning.
Support before and during travel
Before arrival, Physis confirms the agreed services and supplies the operational information needed for the route. During travel, support focuses on the confirmed program and practical coordination when conditions change. Weather, road closures, wildlife and photographic results cannot be guaranteed, so the itinerary retains appropriate flexibility.
Travelers must still be comfortable driving in Costa Rica, following local laws and making safe decisions in current conditions. Independent Adventure is not appropriate for everyone, and Physis may recommend another style when the route, group or comfort level calls for a dedicated driver.
The same standard, a different degree of autonomy

Is a rental vehicle included?
Do not assume that it is. The exact vehicle, rental, insurance and service arrangement must be stated in the individual proposal.
Is self-driving suitable for every Costa Rica route?
No. Road conditions, transfer times, access, weather, group size and driver confidence all affect suitability. Physis may recommend a different style when appropriate.
What support does Physis provide during the journey?
